Worn and Washed Out

Last week I broke out into a deep sweat as I persuaded myself to unwrap and use one of my precious packs of Worn and Washed Fabrics from Kim Porter. This delightful bundle of pinks was bought quite some time ago and it has been lovingly caressed but, its time had come to be used. The last time I saw Kim she said that I had to use them and not just collect them. I probably have another four stashed away. They are just so scrummy. If you have ever seen Kim's stands at the shows you will know why they are so scrummy.

In true "Kim" style this was going to be one of those projects that would be very simple. No maths and complicated piecing and no matching up of points and seams, just strips sewn together randomly. I am not good at doing random and still had to place all the strips out and swap them around but, simple sewing it was. This is bigger than a cot quilt but not a huge single bed quilt, with enough left over to make a crib size quilt/ dolly quilt/ pram quilt. It is also a trip down memory lane.  You may recognise some of the fabrics from Laura Ashley. I am pleased with the progress and today wadding has been bought and I have acquired a lovely brushed cotton bed sheet. This is  in the washing machine as we speak to soften it up a bit so that I can use it for the backing. It is like the stripy fabric in one of the patches below.

Baby gifts in abundance and I finished the baby blanket in time to go on a little journey with Rachel because we have a new generation in the family.

This is Niece Laura and gorgeous baby Daisy Olive, weighing in at a very respectable 7lb 13oz. Mum and baby both doing well.  We got lots of cuddles.

Many of you will have seen on the news of the horrible weather that is plaguing most of Britain which started here in the WestCountry at the start of last week. It has rained and rained and rained and rained. We keep thinking that it can't possibly last but it has. Today has been dry here and even a chink of blue in the sky but for a lot of people the mopping up process is beginning.

This is Kate's garden last Wednesday and as you can see it has narrowly missed coming into the house and Kate has been housebound as she has been unable to get out of her drive and along the lane. It also meant no sewing for us as we could not get there either. I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like to have your home flooded out and your possessions turned into a soggy mess. I am grateful and thankful for where I live and so sorry for those not so fortunate.

This week I have started a little bit of sewing. One fat quarter of shot cotton and lots of scraps which is going to be an ipad bag a la Brigitte Giblin. I don't possess an ipad but I am hopeful that Santa may be very kind to me this year. I so hope he is reading this blog.

Wherever you are, stay warm and dry and keep stitching.

Love Shirley.

  1. The washed and worn fabric looks delightful!! Does she put together selections of fabrics from all ranges (I did go to the link an that is what is seems). Congratulations to the new family member - I am sure she will love the gorgeous quilt - a great reason to break open one of your rolls! That's awful about the flooding, hope it all dries out real soon. Brigitte's work is lovely; I hope you will be able to use that ipad cover real soon!!

  2. An ipad Shirley? That's very 21st century! I didn't realise Daisy was the first of the next generation, looks like she is going to be very spoilt if your gifts are anything to go by and quite right too!

  3. Very pretty fabric and so, so you! If you use it, you can really buy some more without guilt! Lol

Lovely baby too. It's so nice having an excuse to make things.

  4. AND.... ( sorry wonder iPad playing up!). Yes dreadful weather. We're very grateful to live on a hill on chalk.

Hope you have one of these things for Christmas to. :-)

  5. what a sweet lucky baby to receive those gorgeous gifts.
Your new ipad cover looks great. I am guessing they are little diamonds?
Hope your friend manages to dry out a little. We are expecting 37degrees today. Might swap places with her.
    Happy sewing

  6. The gifts for the baby are charming.
I hope Santa reads your blog too as that looks like one nice case. I pads are very addictive . Says she who hardly puts it down.

  7. The quilt is gorgeous! I am pleased you had the courage to finally untie the tape and sew them all together!! Your new family addition is very cute and that little dress is to die for. I think she is going to be spoilt by her Aunty Shirley.
We have seen the wild weather on the news down here, absolutely crazy and I hope the rain eases up soon. We are on the other end of the scale at the moment with heatwave conditions and an expected temp of 40o Celsius today.

  8. The quilt is so pretty and gorgeous....just like the baby.
Saw you weather on TV, crazy weather everywhere, we have had wild weather all day yesterday and last night. Scary winds..Back fence just about to go.
    Good luck for that Ipad...

  9. I'm sure Santa will get the hint about the ipad. You are probably the first and only person with a quilted cover waiting for when the ipad arrives ;). Yes, I've been talking to a friend in Cornwall and she was telling me how bad the weather has been. Even watching football on telly shows that it must be raining all around the UK. I hope it will improve fast. Your friend was indeed lucky that her house didn't get flooded. And your newest grand niece (is that what she is?) is gorgeous.

  10. I love the idea of the worn and washed fabric. What sweet pinks! I think Daisy will look adorable in the pretty dress and those itty bitty booties. I'd buy the birdcage fabric if I found it on the bolt! The flooding looks awful. Too many are having to deal with it this year. I fear this is just the beginning of widespread flooding - hate to think of it. Hope you get your Christmas wish!

Hope sun shines on you today...:0)

  15. Glad to hear you have not been washed away although you probably have webbed feet by now. How scarey for Kate - far too close for comfort. It is going to be a lovely Ipad bag and it is best to get the "wish list" out otherwise you will just have to go out and treat yourself! Take care.

  16. Those pinks are gorgeous Shirley and will make a very soft and pretty quilt. A new baby in the family is such a joyous event and makes everyone feel happy.
Glad you are safe and dry and hope Father Xmas gets the message.

  17. I really love the pink quilt....
And I love your little grand niece's name.
I hope the water goes very quickly.....the weather is just so weird everywhere.
I hope your christmas wish comes true !!!

  18. Hi, Love those pinks and with brushed cotton on the back it's going to be so cosy.
Poor Kate, at least it didn't come in. It's possible I'll be back in the west country for Christmas so the weather had better brighten up.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love pinks! No doubt about it it is one of my favs to cut into when making quilts. I love the girly quilts more than dark manly ones, so the cutting will be fun for you too.
I think your friend was lucky she didn't get flooded...oh my it was close.
Just think of the coastal US in New Jersey and this is just a little bit of rain compared to those poor souls.
At least everyone was warm...another lovely English blogging week Shirley...from Florida, I send you sunshine...

  20. Bought some unworn, unwashed fabric today, but it WAS at least pink so I must be on the right track! Glad the water situation didn't get any worse, but a close run thing. Looks like you are having another of your mega-productive spells ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love the worn and washed fabrics but resist buying any because I know I would never use them. You are right to keep it simple as it looks great.
Glad you have not suffered from the flooding but your friend looks to have been very lucky too - a close call.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow what pictures of the flooding in your area. Hope things have dried out since then. ((hugs))

  23. Dear Shirley,

How happy I am to grab a little time and catch up with your lovely posts and beautiful makes. I have been missing this little treat and look forward to having a teeny tiny more time to read your words more often. First things first, I hope you are well and happy? I think that Kim Porter bundle alone would make me feel on pretty good form; JUST my colours and, of course, you creation is simply perfect. Yes, I would be very happy with that in my little household.

Those flooding photos are certainly shocking. I have read a lot about floods in the UK but have not yet seen any visual evidence.

Keep stitching and smiling and I'll be back soon.

consider this, what if you added a little content?
I ain't saying your information isn't good., however what if you
added a title that makes people desire more?
I mean "Worn and Washed Out" is a little plain. You might peek at Yahoo's home page and see how they create post headlines to get people to click. You might try adding a video or a pic or two to get readers interested about what you've written.
Just my opinion, it might bring your posts a little bit more
    interesting.
